Portrait Prep

How to prepare for your portrait session

NAILS: neat + tidy, treat yourself to a manicure if you have time and don't forget your toes!

MAKEUP: even if you never wear makeup, a little bit is best in front of the camera to accentuate your features. If you prefer to be super minimal, that is totally ok!, I recommend black mascara and a tinted lip gloss for the bare minimum.

HAIR: if you wear your hair down, we can play around with different styles for different poses but we don't have to; whatever your preferred style is will work.

SKIN: lotion! everywhere :)

WARDROBE: Try to avoid loud patterns and/or logos. Neutral colours look classic and primary colours really make a statement - it all depends on the vibe you are going for. Let your personality shine :)

ACCESSORIES: Accessories are a great way to easily get a few looks AND to make your outfit into something special. Hats, big jewelry, colourful shoes, sunglasses, etc. Have fun with it!

SHOES: I love shoes, that is all. If you wear something that looks great but isn’t easy to walk in, please bring a pair of flip-flops or slides that you can easily slip on-and-off for walking from one location to the next.

PROPS: If you want to include props in your session, you are responsible for sourcing and bringing them. Please select a maximum of 3 props so we don't get overwhelmed with options and the session can easily have YOU as the focus.

HOME: Shooting at home is intimate, uniquely your own and great! Anytime of day will work - but daylight is necessary for natural-light image. I will be looking for light coming from windows, clean backgrounds and personal touches of your home to incorporate. Please be sure to remove clutter before I arrive if there is a specific area you would like to focus on. PROTIP: sometimes the most unlikely spot will be ideal for a great image. Don't neglect bathrooms, hallways and anywhere else that you might not think we'll use.

OUTDOORS: Shooting outdoors is great! There is nothing you need to do to prepare the location :) All we can do is check the weather and ensure we plan for the best light which is always the first 2 hours after sunrise OR the last 2 hours before sunset. If you want a mix of Indoor + Outdoor photos, we will plan accordingly.

FLEXIBILITY: Consider being open to changing things up to get the best and more flattering light and angles that we can possibly find. We can always move things around to make it work. The possibilities are endless!

PLAN TO: Carry nothing! I can fit a pair of flip flops, your phones and your keys into my bag but other than that, lets keep it simple and plan to carry nothing while we make photos.

As always, please be in touch if you have any questions or concerns. Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your session. Thanks! xo
